Classic Album Review: The Skygreen Leopards | Life & Love In Sparrow’s Meadow

This came out in 2005 — or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

If the organic title and lysergic cover art remind you of one of those Elephant 6 albums by the likes of Olivia Tremor Control, that shouldn’t be a big surprise.

Bay Area duo The Skygreen Leopards have definitely been taking some of the same drugs. Only they spent their time tripping out to Pentangle records instead of Brian Wilson and The Beach BoysPet Sounds. As a result, their fourth disc Life And Love In Sparrow’s Meadow is almost equal parts folk and psychedelia, with free-wheeling arrangements, loose (and sometimes wildly off-key) performances and plenty of field-recording weirdness — but always anchored by simple acoustic guitars, gentle melodies and folksy instrumentation. Tune in, turn on, drop out and dig the scenery. You’ll find these leopards out standing in their field.
