This came out in 2004 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):
Nobody can do Warren Zevon songs the way he did ’em.
Thankfully, though, that didn’t deter some of the late singer-songwriter’s friends and admirers from assembling this much-deserved tribute. And it won’t stop you from enjoying nearly every track. The roster includes the usual California suspects like Don Henley (who croons Searching For A Heart) and Jackson Browne (who tackles Poor Poor Pitiful Me, which Zevon reportedly wrote about him), along with the likes of Bruce Springsteen (who turns in a live My Ride’s Here), Bob Dylan (who rambles his way through Mutineer), The Wallflowers (who crank out Lawyers, Guns and Money) and, for some reason, Adam Sandler (who isn’t as annoying as you’d figure on Werewolves of London). For novelty value, however, you can’t top the reunited Pixies’ raucously gonzo Ain’t That Pretty At All. Somewhere, Warren is enjoying himself.
