This came out in 2004 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):
New doesn’t always mean improved. Just ask The Waking Eyes.
New might be the last word you’d use to describe the sound of this buzz-worthy local foursome featuring ex-members of The Pets. Rather, classic, nostalgic and maybe even timeless are the sort of terms that come to mind for their ’70s-vintage approach. On their major-label debut Video Sound, the boys fuse groovy ’n’ raucous garage-rock (the sizzlin’ single Watch Your Money), jangly Beatle-pop hookiness (On A Train and Headlights) and melodic power-pop smarts (Waiting and Get Up Easy). Admittedly, this 11-cut CD might have been more timely had it come out back at the height of the guitar-rawk revival. But hey, hooky songs and three-chord rock ’n’ roll never really go out of style. Bottom line: If you’re looking for a solid, smartly executed slice of crunchy, chunky retro-rock, The Waking Eyes have it.
