Classic Album Review: Ashlee Simpson | Autobiography

The debut from popstar Jessica's little sis has more in common with Alanis & Avril.

This came out in 2004 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Yep, she’s Jessica Simpson’s little sis. But 19-year-old Ashlee Simpson is apparently no bubble-headed bubblegummer. She’s a rocker. No, really.

I’m as surprised as anyone to report that. And I’m even more surprised to tell you that on this decent dozen-track debut, the raven-tressed, raspy-throated teen makes a decently sizable racket — and makes it clear she has more in common with the punchy guitar-rock of Alanis Morissette and Avril Lavigne than the gloppy pop of her older sibling. The folks down South seem to agree — Ashlee’s Autobiography debuted at No. 1 in the U.S. a few weeks back. Guess now we know who got the gumption in that family. And perhaps the talent.
