Classic DVD Review: Paul McCartney | Paul Is Live

The pop icon decides to reissue a decade-old gig on DVD. The results? Not fab.

This came out in 2003 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Looks like Sir Paul McCartney finally got around to cleaning out that closet in the spare room. Either that or he needed a quick bit of cash to pay off those outstanding VISA bills for his wedding.

Those are about the only two reasons one can see for reissuing the 1993 concert video Paul Is Live on DVD. Granted, it’s a well-produced set featuring 85 minutes of footage from the New World Tour. And yes, it includes a whole whack of classics like Drive My Car, Let Me Roll It, All My Loving, We Can Work it Out, Michelle, Magical Mystery Tour, Lady Madonna, Paperback Writer, Penny Lane, Live and Let Die, Let it Be, Yesterday and Hey Jude. But it also has a whole bunch of long-forgotten dreck from whatever album he was promoting at the time. And compared to the list of far superior McCartney videos out there — like Live At The Cavern Club, Wingspan and Back In The U.S. 2002, to name three — Paul Is Live seems rather, well, dead.
