Classic DVD Review: Alkaline Trio | Halloween At The Metro

The darkhearted Chicago pop-punks give the kids a treat — and a trick.

This came out in 2003 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Every generation needs a good Halloween band of its own.

A few years ago, the kids had Marilyn Manson. But nowadays, Mr. Spooky and his industrial glam-goth are about as scary (and about as original) as the last Halloween movie. Luckily, Alkaline Trio have arrived to give the kids a more timely fright. Their propulsive, melodic pop-punk couldn’t be more current, while their blackly humourous, death-obsessed lyrics couldn’t be better suited for your next Halloween bash. And, thanks to their superb latest album Good Mourning, they’re hotter than a burning bag of dog poop right now. All of which makes this live DVD — featuring a revved-up, makeup-clad Halloween show from last year in Chicago — a swell souvenir for fans and a surefire moneymaker for the band. One problem: It has no songs from their latest album. But hey, what’s a Halloween treat without a little trick?
