Classic Album Review: Jackie Mittoo | Champion In The Arena

The late reggae pioneer's latest posthumous set features long-lost instrumentals.

This came out in 2003 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

THE ORIGINAL RELEASE DATES: 1976 & ’77.

THE BACK STORY: Jamaican reggae pioneer Jackie Mittoo was a founding member of The Skatalites and musical director at the legendary Studio One. This latest posthumous reissue — Mittoo died of cancer in 1990 — contains instrumentals culled from various long-lost albums.

THE GOODIES: The backing band here includes the legendary reggae rhythm section of Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare.

THE EXTRAS: A lengthy biography in the liner notes.
