Classic Album Review: Morning Star | My Place in the Dust

The Bristol slo-pop outfit’s album bridges Nick Drake, Luna and Scott Walker.

This came out in 2003 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Crepuscular isn’t a word I use often in a CD review.

But it’s the first word that sprang to mind while listening to My Place In The Dust by Morning Star, the Bristol slo-pop outfit featuring singer-songwriter-guitarist-violinist Jesse Vernon and members of Portishead and P.J. Harvey‘s band. Of course, crepuscular wasn’t the only word that arose while listening to these 10 cuts, which suggest of a meeting of the minds between Nick Drake, Luna and Scott Walker. Here are some others: Understated. Esoteric. Sophisticated. Velvet. Lulling. Neo-folkie. Honest. Delicate. Listenable. Twilit. Romantic. Spacious. Woozy. Sincere. Airbrushed. Nostalgic. Bohemian. Gorgeous. Burnished. Rich. Smooth. Silken. Restrained. Stirring. But most of all, I gotta go with crepuscular.
