Classic Album Review: Various Artists | Rip This Joint

HIgh Times & King Biscuit Flower Hour roll up a compilation of classic concert cuts.

This came out in 2002 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Music of the stoner, by the stoner and for the stoner.

Rip This Joint, from High Times magazine and the King Biscuit Flower Hour radio show, collects 23 user-friendly concert recordings that put the roll in rock ’n’ roll. Naturally, much of the set consists of jam-banders like the Grateful Dead offshoot Kingfish, String Cheese Incident, moe. and Tiny Universe. But there are also hits for the stoner-rocker (Foghat’s Slow Ride, Humble Pie’s 30 Days In The Hole, Mountain’s Mississippi Queen), highs for the blues-head (Gov’t Mule’s I Can’t Quit You Baby, North Mississippi AllstarsAll Night Long), and even some smokin’ country (Commander Cody’s Down to Seeds and Stems Again). The lack of recording dates and personnel in the liner notes might harsh your buzz somwewhat, but I doubt many buyers will complain. They’ll be too busy trying to clean their weed on the little tiny gatefold book.
