Jay Slay gives Ed Sheeran a run for his money with his reinvention of the chart-topper’s single Shape Of You — showcasing today on Tinnitist.
Incorporating gritty guitar and Latin-flavored percussion that lend an air of sensuality to his dancehall-inspired cover, the electronica producer ices the cake with sultry vocals from Scarlett Darling that pay homage to the original while captivating the listener.
“I wanted to move away from strictly making original music,” Slay shares. “I wanted to expand into making the occasional cover song, having fun creating entirely new instrumentations and harmonization to well-known tunes. I wanted to bring life to these hits in different ways.”
High-octane sonic exploration is par for the course for the DJ, producer, and member of Edmonton’s Vibe Raiders label crew. A classically trained pianist with 20 years of studies, Slay has a deep understanding of music’s inner workings. This knowledge allows his productions live and breathe, limited only by his imagination and his vast array of production tools.
While Slay is a formidable producer in both the live and studio spheres, he is also a respected asset in the music community, working as a music educator, mental health speaker and contributing author.
