Dynesti Makes A Tough Choice With MissCarriage

The Scarborough singer chronicles a personal tragedy in her latest single.

Dynesti shares a painful personal memory in raw, soul-filled new single MissCarriage — showcasing today on Tinnitist.

The lead single from the Scarborough hip-hop/soul singer, songwriter and rapper’s upcoming full-length album, MissCarriage seeks to inspire open-minded and compassionate conversations about bodily autonomy, unplanned pregnancies and single parenthood. Fittingly, it was inspired by the hardest decision of Dynesti’s life — a heart-wrenching story of being pressured by her lover to terminate an unplanned pregnancy that occurred despite preventative measures.

In collaboration with producer AudioGibbs, Dynesti poured her pain into the messages and melodies to empower women going through similar circumstances and to encourage the support of their loved ones. The song title is a play on words that ask if women in these situations would choose life as a “Miss” — a single parent pushing a “Carriage” — or if they would terminate the pregnancy due to the lack of support. “I want them to know that they are not alone, they are seen and loved no matter what they choose to do in the end… even if their right to choose was taken.”

While many North Americans — especially women of colour face a lack of legal protections and crises of maternal health — Dynesti speaks from her own profound experience with raw lyricism, stirring vocals and striking visuals. Written during the thick of personal catastrophe, the song — and its accompanying video premiering in the evening of March 25 — gives voice to millions of women facing such pivotal moments, agonizing decisions, and unsupportive partners. She sends an empowering message: They are not alone, they are seen and loved.

Dynesti delivers royal hip-hop/soul with a dash of rudegyal (feminine Afro-Caribbean spice). As a rapper, singer and dancer immersed in island cultures, her vibe fuses neo-soul, conscious hip-hop, and dancehall. Emerging from six years in the shelter system and programs like Sketch Arts, Rise Edutainment, Manifesto, Unity and The Honey Jam, her art centres around freedom, honesty, raw lyricism, and wry humour. The nourishing Dyna energy will resurge over 2024, leading to the autumn release of her first full-length LP, The Dyna: Breakfast. This second instalment of her five-part recording project features songs about womanhood, mental health, love, and relationships as a Black girl from a broken home.
