Classic Album Review: Mariah Carey | The Emancipation of Mimi

This came out in 2005 — or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, Beyonce and her bandmates should be feeling highly complimented.

From its bootylicious (and heavily Photoshopped) cover photo to its groovy R&B cuts, Mariah Carey’s 10th album almost sounds like she’s auditioning for Destiny’s Child. Thing is, it also happens to be her best work in years, with more upbeat club tracks — notably Get Your Number and To The Floor — and less vocal histrionics than usual.
