Classic Album Review: DJ Rap | Touching Bass

She's as adept at creating her own grooves as she is at spinning those of others.

This came out in 2003 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Take one look at DJ Rap and it’s easy to see why she’s a hit with nerdy critics and music geeks. But take a listen to her albums and it’s even easier to understand why she’s also a respected and much sought-after dance-music composer and producer.

Touching Bass, her third full-length release, is a two-disc mix set with one platter of aggressive drum ’n’ bass and another of relentlessly groovy breaks. Naturally, DJ Rap — real name: Charissa Saverio — knows how to select, sequence and structure a set for maximum impact. More importantly, though, self-penned cuts like Come 4th, Out There and Hardstep show she’s as adept at creating her own grooves as she is at spinning those of others.
