This came out in 2005 — or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):
Long story short: Miles rocks out.
Backed by then-young turks like drummer Billy Cobham, keyboardist Herbie Hancock and guitarist John McLaughlin, the iconic iconoclast and restlessly inventive jazz trumpeter goes all-out electric to deliver two lengthy rounds of jazz-rock fusion, with boogie beats, fiery performances and searing solos. The result: One of his hardest-hitting albums, and thus a fitting tribute from one renegade champion to another.
FIRST RELEASED: 1971.
HIGHLIGHTS: The disc consists of lengthy jams edited into a pair of so-called “Frankenstein tracks,” but Cobham’s massive beats and McLaughlin’s up-front guitars hold it all together.
EXTRAS! EXTRAS! Just an essay on the sessions. If it’s more music you want — and there’s plenty to be had — pony up for the five-disc Complete Jack Johnson Sessions box set.
