Classic Album Review: Bablicon | In A Different City

The Chicago trio's Zappa / Beefheart musical backwater is a nice place to visit.

This came out in 1999 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

This Chicago trio live in a different city, all right — and it’s a backwater midway between Beefheartville and Zappatown, judging from the ’60s-style dada-freakout of their debut CD.

To get there, just follow your ears; all the signposts are here: The skronking saxophones and atonal sheets of sound, the wild-man skin-pounding and free-jazz format, the orchestral weirdness and instrumental tomfoolery. Sure, it’s kind of an out-of-the-way little juncture, but it’s a real nice place to visit.
