Albums Of The Week: The Cubical | Cut Me Like A Hog

THE EDITED PRESS RELEASE:The Cubical are based in Liverpool and have spent years building up a cult following — and a reputation as one of Europe’s best live bands. Their sound is based in the blues, but like Captain Beefheart, Frank Zappa and Tom Waits before them, they twist it around and shake it up and inevitably end up with something altogether a little weirder.

A Cubical show has been likened to a “rock ’n’ roll medicine show,” an assault on the senses. Eyes are invariably glued to the chaotic dancing of six-foot-five frontman Dan Wilson, indefatigable multi-instrumentalist Alex Gavaghan and charismatic hard-man guitarist and harmonica player John Paul Green. And their interwoven Telecaster twang, wailing harmonica, and incessantly pounding bass and drums are all topped by one of the gruffest and most distinctive blues howls since Howlin’ Wolf himself. All of this ensures that audiences are drawn into the hypnotic swamp blues-intensity that is central to The Cubical experience.

The Cubical have toured all over the world, taking in the U.S.A., Australia, Germany, Norway, France, Spain, Ireland, Holland and Czech Republic, playing alongside the likes of Bob Dylan, Kiss, The Black Lips, Blondie, Chris Isaak and The Magic Band, to name but a few.”
