Classic Album Review: Dirty Projectors | Slaves’ Graves & Ballads

Imagine Brian Wilson with less money and a darker worldview & you're almost there.

This came out in 2004 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

If Brian Wilson lived in Connecticut with a lot less money, greater classical ambitions and a much darker worldview, he might have sounded a lot like The Dirty ProjectorsDave Longstreth.

And orch-pop opuses such as Pet Sounds and Smile might have sounded a little like Slaves’ Graves and Ballads. Needless to say, the ’60s would have sounded a whole lot different too.
