Classic Album Review: The Damnwells | Bastards Of The Beat

These up-and-coming Brooklyn Americana rockers make a memorable entrance.

This came out in 2004 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Singer-guitarist Alex Dezen’s rootsy melodies and rusty melancholy are steeped in equal measures of Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy and The ReplacementsPaul Westerberg.

Toss in another picker and the rhythm section from Whiskeytown and you’ve got Brooklyn up-and-comers The Damnwells. And if you’re looking for a damn fine little Americana album, you could do far worse than Bastards Of The Beat, their superior full-length debut.
