Classic Album Review: James Keelaghan | Then Again

The folk vet’s nostalgic set is somewhere between a best-of and a new album.

This came out in 2004 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

WHERE YOU’LL FIND HIM: Onstage at the Folk Festival.

FILE UNDER: The times, they have a-changed.

LOWDOWN: OK, he’s not a Winnipeg native. But Alberta folk vet James Keelaghan lives here now, so we can claim him the same way Toronto claimed Chantal Kreviazuk a while back. But even we can’t pretend we were responsible for the tunes on his latest disc. The nostalgic Then Now is somewhere between a best-of and a new album, with the singer-guitarist reworking 11 cuts from his lengthy catalogue. With his warm-breeze voice and ability to craft melancholy melodies as richly evocative as a prairie sunset, Keelaghan makes these cuts sound as fresh and vibrant as if they were new. Let him introduce you to these old friends of his and they’ll soon be old friends of yours.
