Classic Album Review: Jaylene Johnson | Finding Beautiful

The Christian popster combines angelic vocals with universally accessible songs.

This came out in 2004 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

WHERE YOU’LL FIND HER: At play, in the fields of the Lord.

FILE UNDER: Singing His praises.

LOWDOWN: For music that’s designed to spread the good word, a lot of Christian pop can be so earnestly reverent it alienates the secular crowd. Not so with contemporary folk-pop singer-songwriter Jaylene Johnson. Granted, songs like Angels and Wonder, in which she marvels at the powers of God, make it clear where she’s coming from. But for the most part, Johnson’s lyrical messages and poppy melodies are more than accessible enough to make listening to Finding Beautiful enjoyable no matter what your beliefs. The fact that her undeniably angelic pipes seem equally influenced by goddesses like Joni Mitchell and Sarah McLachlan is no sin, either.
