Classic Album Review: Rick Wakeman | Return To The Centre Of The Earth

The former Yes keyboard wizard offers the comeback nobody wanted. Just say no.

This came out in 1999 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

The iceman cometh back.

Exactly 25 years after his prog-rock concept album Journey To The Centre Of The Earth, former Yes man and keyboard wizard (in every sense) Rick Wakeman retraces his steps with Return To The Blah Blah Blah. Emphasis on the blah: If you didn’t know better, you’d swear Rick has been lost in a cave for 25 years. The old fossil has apparently missed out on every musical trend since the glory days of ELPReturn has all the ridiculous pomp and overblown puffery of the worst ’70s rock. Not to mention vocals by Ozzy Osbourne, Bonnie Tyler, Katrina (Walking On Sunshine) Leskanich, and narration by Patrick (Hey, The Cheque Cleared!) Stewart. Strictly an anthropological curiosity. Just say no.
