Classic Album Review: Texas | Careful What You Wish For

The Scottish popsters treat you to another set of standard, forgettable fare.

This came out in 2004 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

I know people who swear Texas are a great band. But they’re the sort of people who put pictures of Chrissie Hynde-like vocalist Sharleen Spiteri up in their cubicles.

Granted, I understand the attraction. But beyond that obvious selling point, I’ve never found much to love about these Scottish popsters and their lightweight, vaguely rootsy sound. That opinion has not been improved by their sixth studio effort Careful What You Wish For, which is basically a batch of standard, instantly forgettable pop-rockers and smoky ballads that sound like Pretenders B-sides — except that Chrissie usually has more sense than to shoehorn rappers onto her tracks in an obvious bid for street cred. Luckily for some fans, though, there are about a dozen pics of Sharleen to put up in the cubicle.
