Classic Album Review: The Special Goodness | Land Air Sea

Members of Weezer & Rocket From The Crypt get together — & sound like the Foos.

This came out in 2004 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

One of the guys in The Special Goodness is the drummer in Weezer. The other used to be the drummer in Rocket From The Crypt. So it would only be logical that together, they would create songs that blended the arena-rocking power-pop of the former and the propulsive punk&B of the latter. Logical — but not realistic.

Land Air Sea, the debut album from Pat Wilson and Atom Willard, is mellower, poppier and far more sincere than anything they have done with their other outfits. Granted, a few tunes like Life Goes By and Oops sport some familiarly crunchy power-chord riffs, while stickman Willard still pounds the skins like they just dissed his mama. Ultimately, though, with their chiming guitars, melodic vocals, pop-chart hooks and lightly chugging grooves, several of these dozen cuts have a little more in common with another band fronted by a rock-star drummer-turned-guitarist: Dave Grohl and Foo Fighters. Which may not be logical. But it’s nothing to complain about either.
