Classic Album Review: Bobby Bare Jr.’s Young Criminals’ Starvation League | “OK – I’m Sorry … ” EP

The second-generation Nashville singer-songwriter has nothing to apologize for.

This came out in 2004 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Few singers could get away with covering I’d Like To Teach The World To Sing — but Bobby Bare Jr. is one of them.

This is partly because the second-generation Nashville country-rocker is enough of a wiseass to get a kick out of remaking an old Coke jingle. But also because he’s enough of a sap to cherish the legitimate pop tune at its core. That curiously endearing balance of impudence and sincerity has been Bare Jr.’s M.O. for a while now. And since it ain’t broke, he doesn’t try to fix it on “OK – I’m Sorry … ”, an eight-song EP from his joyfully skewed Young Criminals’ Starvation League. Along with I’d Like To Teach…, the disc offers new tunes like the romantically strummy Pinky and the reggae-flavoured Mother Ucker, along with a few odds ’n’ ends and live versions of previously released beauties like Flat Chested Girl From Maynardville and the homicidal Valentine. As usual, Bare Jr.’s got nothing to be sorry about here.
