Classic Album Review: Chilliwack | There And Back

The pop-rock vet enjoys himself on a solidly satisfying, surprisingly rocking live set.

This came out in 2004 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

If you’re a classic rocker, you have two choices: 1) You can go all Norma Desmond and waste your life trying to rekindle the fading embers of fame; 2) You can relax and have some fun. Chilliwack’s Bill Henderson appears to be solidly in the latter group.

That much is clear from the solidly satisfying and surprisingly rocking There And Back, a live disc from the latest incarnation of his veteran pop-rock outfit. On this 15-song set, Henderson doesn’t try to downplay the fact that he’s the only original member in the band; heck, he even includes a detailed family tree of the whole lineage. Nor does he waste time trying to sell us new material; he delivers 77 solid minutes of hits like Fly At Night, Lonesome Mary, Crazy Talk, Communication Breakdown, Arms of Mary, Baby Blue, California Girl and (of course) My Girl. And he delivers them with his high-flying vocals still at full strength, with the help a band of competent but understated players, and with all the confidence of a guy who knows he’s made the right choice.
