Classic Album Review: David Banner | MTA2: Baptized In Dirty Water

The rapper strikes well before the iron has cooled with his crunktastic second LP.

This came out in 2004 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

If you recognize the name David Banner as the secret identity of TV’s Incredible Hulk, congratulations! You’re a geek.

But hey, don’t feel bad. So is Lavell Crump — the secret identity of rapper David Banner — and look how well he’s doing. Last summer, the aggressive hip-hopper burst on to the scene with his muscular debut disc Mississippi: The Album and its brash smash hit Like A Pimp. Now, striking well before the iron has even begun to cool, he’s back with the crunktastic sequel MTA2: Baptized In Dirty Water. As the beatboxes thwack and the funkdafied basslines pop and bounce, Banner — a man equipped with the gruffest growl this side of DMX and a syncopated style that keeps the listener off-balance — spends half his time spitting X-rated thug-life tales and the other half trying to atone for his sins. In other words, he’s a man with a split personality — just what you’d expect from a hero with a secret identity.
