Classic Album Review: Victim of Modern Age | Channels Like Capillaries

The Louisiana indie-rockers unleash a searing document of intricate angst.

This came out in 2004 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Not all Southern rock bands live by the credo of beards, beer bellies and boogie.

Take, for instance, Victim of Modern Age. These good young boys hail from Lafayette, La., but you’d never guess it from their debut full-length Channels Like Capillaries. A searing document of intricate angst comparable to a more aggressive Shellac, this 10-cut disc is fuelled by the tension and passion of emo, but not constrained by it. Sure, the yearning yelp and churning chords dished up by singer-guitarists Bobby Nixon and Allen Clements are certainly familiar to the backpack set. But VOMA distinguish themselves from all the other heartbreak kids with their literate lyrics, ambitious compositions, keen sense of dynamics and impeccable performances. Victims they may be, but these guys aren’t willing ones. And if the fury and frenzy of Channels Like Capillaries are anything to go by, they sure aren’t going quietly.
