Classic Album Review: Cream | BBC Sessions

Enjoy two dozen unreleased live performances from the ’60s blues-rock power trio.

This came out in 2003 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Sick of hearing dad jabber on and on about how much better music was in his day? Here’s some advice: Do not, repeat not, buy him BBC Sessions, a new collection of old radio-show recordings by the consummate ’60s blues-rock power-trio Cream.

Hell, don’t even tell him about it. Because then he will buy it. And you will have to listen to it again and again. You’ll have to listen to nearly two dozen unreleased live performances of way-old numbers like I Feel Free, Strange Brew, Tales of Brave Ulysses and Sunshine Of Your Love. You’ll have to listen to Ginger Baker’s crisply complex, jazzy drumming, bassist Jack Bruce’s raspy vocals and, most importantly, tons of fiery guitar solos from Eric Clapton back before he looked like, well, your dad. You’ll also have to sit through old interviews with Clapton and hilariously kitschy jibber-jabber from the velvet-voiced DJ. But here’s the worst part: The more you listen to Cream’s BBC Sessions, the more you’ll realize the old man has a point.
