Classic Album Review: The Fleshtones | Do You Swing?

The garage-rock vets offer their umpteenth set of boisterous, infectious pop nuggets.

This came out in 2003 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

If anybody deserves to cash in on the garage-rock revival, it’s The Fleshtones. After all, these New Yorkers were dishing up trashy go-go grooves and three-chord fuzztone anthems when The Hives were rocking cradles.

Do You Swing?, their umpteenth album and finest effort in ages, confirms these oldsters still have enough moves left to show all the kids out there how it’s done. Drawing from a wide sonic pallette — the spunky British Invasion guitar-pop of The Kinks and Animals, the chugging R&B of Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels, the boardwalk frat-rock of ? and the Mysterians, the pounding surf of the Ventures and Surfaris — vocalist Peter Zaremba and co. fashion boisterous, infectious pop nuggets whose hip-swinging, hair-shaking coolness is only enhanced by their handclaps-and-harmonica authenticity. After nearly 30 years in the game, The Fleshtones are officially back in the swing of things.
