Your bout of post-Pop depression is officially over. Three years after Iggy Pop announced he was going to retire from recording, he’s returning to active duty with a new album titled Free, which comes out Sept. 4. For fans like me, it’s definitely cause for celebration — thought you might also want to temper your expectations just slightly. Unlike his rock-fuelled 2016 Josh Homme collaboration Post-Pop Depression, Free — which finds him working with jazz trumpeter Leron Thomas and experimental guitarist Sarah (Noveller) Lipstate — is billed as “uniquely somber and contemplative.” Based on the ambient title cut above, that seems pretty accurate.
Quoth The Ig in a press release: “This is an album in which other artists speak for me, but I lend my voice… By the end of the tours following Post Pop Depression, I felt sure that I had rid myself of the problem of chronic insecurity that had dogged my life and career for too long. But I also felt drained. And I felt like I wanted to put on shades, turn my back, and walk away. I wanted to be free. I know that’s an illusion, and that freedom is only something you feel, but I have lived my life thus far in the belief that that feeling is all that is worth pursuing; all that you need — not happiness or love necessarily, but the feeling of being free. So this album just kind of happened to me, and I let it happen.”
As usual, Iggy’s album was only one of a slew of new releases announced over the past 24 hours. Check out the latest additions below, and of course, head over to the Upcoming Releases page for the entire fall list.
