Sometimes you just have to take the bull by the horns. For veteran singer-songwriter, author and part-time poet Jay Aymar, that time is now; the stellar result is his game-changing sixth album Your Perfect Matador and its premiere single Walls Are Pages — whose video is premiering exclusively on Tinnitist!
Set to deliver his biggest vision yet, Your Perfect Matador serves a collection of what Aymar refers to as “deeply personal love songs.” Fret not regarding frets, however; “musically I wanted to rock out a bit more,” he says. “I felt these songs required an edgier feel.” The release strikes a perfect balance, much like life.
It’s a sentiment Aymar is known for. That the Sault Ste. Marie-raised musician holds an English literature degree comes as little surprise; one listen reveals lyrics rich in storytelling, influenced by classic literary themes, and spanning the gamut on everyday topics like life, love, spirituality, and the human condition. “This is the album I’ve long wanted to create,” Aymar reflects. “There is an intentional, almost cinematic feel to this record. From the moment I arrive to her graffiti-filled village to the moment it fades into the rear-view… From hope to pain and back again… It’s all here.
“Working with a world-class producer like Michael has been an extremely rewarding experience,” Aymar shares on constructing Your Perfect Matador in-studio with Michael Wojewoda (Barenaked Ladies, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Amelia Curran). “He has a gift for putting the artist at ease and drawing out their inner musical vision. Or, as he puts it, ‘coaxing magical performances out of fragile egos.’ I love that. It really does sum it up.”
The band holds strong with Champagne James Robertson on lead guitar, Robbie Grunwald on keys, Devon Henderson on bass, Wojewoda on drums and Aymar on rhythm guitar and lead vocals. “How can a guy go wrong with a combo like that?” he asks. The answer is he can’t. See and hear for yourself above in the lyric video for Walls Are Pages, a Banksy-inspired tale set to swampy electric roots music. Your Perfect Matador arrives Friday, Oct. 12.
