Classic Album Review: John Doe | Forever Hasn’t Happened Yet

This came out in 2005 — or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

X man John Doe gets by with more than a little help from his friends on this fifth solo album.

Enlisting old pals like Dave Alvin, Grant Lee Phillips and D.J. Bonebrake, Doe delivers a typically earthy and earnest 11-song set of rootsy rockers and folky acoustic ballads. The best moments, however, come when he teams up with female vocalists like Neko Case and Kristin Hersh on duets that recall Doe’s glory days with Exene. A thing of beauty — and a joy forever.
