This came out in 2005 — or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):
Alberta’s beloved cowboy troubadour saddles up again on Songs From The Gravel Road.
And even though it’s been five years since his last studio set, country legend and revered folk legend Ian Tyson has no trouble picking up his own trail and following it without a misstep. With their lightly twangy guitars and hickory-smoked vocals, these 10 simple, soothing, sweetly produced tales of the land, the mountains, the sky, the road and the loves left behind find Tyson sticking to familiar sonic and thematic terrain somewhere on the backroads near Rodney Crowell and The Flatlanders. Sure, it might be more interesting to hear Tyson venture out of his comfort zone. But at this stage of the game, he’s earned the right to relax and enjoy the ride.
