Albums Of The Week: The Tragically Hip | Up To Here Deluxe Edition

THE EDITED PRESS RELEASE:Up To Here was released Sept. 5, 1989, as The Tragically Hip’s first full-length album, an introduction that brought them breakthrough success, including two No. 1 Canadian singles — Blow At High Dough and New Orleans is Sinking — while earning the band a Juno for Most Promising Artist in 1990.

The expanded reissue of Up To Here is a must-have for collectors, presented on four LPs or three CDs, alongside a book documenting the history of the era. The reissue includes a newly remastered version of the original album, plus four previously unreleased songs that didn’t make the cut — She’s Got What It Takes, Get Back Again, Rain, Hearts And Fire and Wait So Long. The package also includes demos from 1988, recorded prior to the Up To Here session. A recording of Live At Misty Moon, the special filmed for MuchMusic in 1990 from the Misty Moon Cabaret in Halifax, with an accompanying one-hour concert film on Blu-ray, rounds out the set.

For many fans, Get Back Again is the holy grail of unreleased tracks from the band. It was before their signed their first record deal with MCA (now Universal Music Canada) and produced by Chris Wardman in November 1988. It has been remixed and mastered to today’s standards. The band performed Get Back Again during the Live At Misty Moon show, which made it the only recorded version of the song until now. A  new video for Get Back Again was directed by Cleveland Henderson, the son of director and frequent collaborator Pete Henderson (Locked In The Trunk Of A Car, Courage).

This year marks the 40th anniversary of The Tragically Hip’s formation, a milestone for the beloved band. Fittingly, they have broken open the archives, releasing the four-part documentary No Dress Rehearsal and the book This Is Our Life. The Up To Here box celebrates the early days of the band and is the latest installment of a series of reissues honouring the band’s extensive catalogue. Previous releases have included the Road Apples 30th Anniversary Deluxe Boxset (2021), the Fully Completely Vinyl Release (2022), and the Phantom Power 25th Anniversary Deluxe Boxset (2023).”
