Sophia Kaloustian has something to get off her chest with her new single Used To Breathe — showcasing today on Tinnitist.
The Los Angeles pop singer-songwriter shares a different take on losing someone you once loved in her latest single. The track explores themes of self-growth and introspection, something the songwriter is known for addressing in her thoughtfully constructed lyrics.
Used To Breathe is a story of finding oneself. After dedicating years of her life to relationships and other people, Kaloustian is now learning who she is as an individual and the challenges that come with making that major transition. The track is composed of Kaloustian’s dynamic vocals mixed with her iconic sonic blend of pop and indie influences. The singer narrates a story of heartbreak, but not the kind where you miss the person. More so, this tale is about missing love itself and the concept of romance.
“This song doesn’t discuss the typical ‘I miss my ex and am heartbroken’ theme that most breakup songs focus on,” explains Kaloustian. “What separates this song from the norm is that I’m missing the space these relationships used to take up in my life and how I’m trying to cope with the absence of such a significant presence… suddenly being gone.”
Kaloustian opens up about what it’s like to be single for the first time since she was 14 years old. Because relationships were a quintessential part of her adolescence, to the artist, “The act of being in love with someone… was so natural for so long, it was as if it was an essential normal bodily function that I didn’t even have to actively engage in, such as breathing.”
Kaloustian began her musical journey at a young age and has continued to hone her craft through the years, with more than a decade of live performances under her belt. She graduated from university in 2023 with a degree in commercial music with an emphasis in vocal performance. Since then, she has released the singles Best intentions and Slow Dancing, Slow Destruction, showcasing her ability to lyrically and vocally build a world around her songs.
