Area Resident: Filthy Bodies | Exclusive Video Premiere

The prolific Ottawa polymath unveils a new single about Hoarders – with a capital H.

Area Resident puts his Filthy Bodies on display for all to see in his brand-new single and video — premiering exclusively on Tinnitist.

Ottawa’s prolific, home-recording journalist/indie rocker has songs burning a hole in his pocket, as usual. Area Resident (aka Doug Hempstead) is currently recording tracks for what will be his next album… or EP? He hasn’t decided. The summer and fall of 2024 saw the release of his 9th LP, Orgone, and an EP of remixed songs done with The Autumn Clearing (Paul Anthony), called Transmute. Hempstead is currently deciding if the crop of songs he’s working on now will be his 10th LP or two more EPs.

“There’s a bunch of stuff I’m working on at home, like I always have,” he says. “Alone as usual, and sending those tracks to Jordon (Zadorozny, of Blinker The Star) for mixing and overdubs. Right now I’m thinking of doing an EP of these and another EP recorded at the rehearsal space that the live version of Area Resident uses. Those songs will be reworked band recordings of old Area Resident songs — rearranged the way we do them live.”

Up until now, the band you’d go and see live in and around the Ottawa area features musicians not found on any Area Resident album. “I’ve always wanted to do something about this,” Hempstead says.

But one of the new tracks sounded too good to hold on to when the Zadorozny mix appeared in Hempstead’s inbox in February. The track, called Filthy Bodies, was the second of four new songs already completed for the next release.

“It’s about hoarders,” Hempstead says. “That’s actually Hoarders with a capital H. You know, the TV show? Me and my sweetie got good and hooked on it and the other one — Hoarding: Buried Alive. So, Filthy Bodies was born out of that, and lots of in-jokes about crock pots.”

Hempstead officially releases Filthy Bodies on March 7 — timed to correspond to the return of Bandcamp Friday. “I’ve got big plans for the $6 I’m gonna make,” he says.

Filthy Bodies will also be available on all streaming services. Doug kindly provided us with a video he did for it, and we’re delighted to premiere it.
