Classic Album Review: Tegan And Sara | So Jealous

The quarreling Quin twins create their most confident, catchy and consistent work.

This came out in 2004 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Sibling rivalry worked for The Kinks. It worked for Oasis. Now it seems to be working for Tegan and Sara.

To hear them talk — or argue on this enhanced CD — you’d think So Jealous is less a title than the driving force behind their music. Well, more power to them. This third disc is the Calgary-born Quin twins’ most confident, catchy and consistent offering. Choppy guitars, peppy beats, poppy melodies, girlish punky vocals and the new wave synths of Matt (Weezer) Sharp contrast and complement T&S’s lovelorn angst and harmonies. And thanks to the Quins’ focused songcraft and crisp production skills, these 14 cuts are lean and clean, with no extra junk or arty self-indulgence. I bet plenty of folks will be jealous.
