Classic Album Review: Pony Da Look | The Forcefield Weakens

This T.O. foursome are the missing link between Martha & The Muffins & BBR.

This came out in 2004 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Hey, kids! Hands up — who wants to listen to a barely competent ’80s-style synth-pop band from Toronto? Hello? Anybody?

OK, I know it doesn’t sound very enticing. But the truth is that Pony Da Look sound a lot better than they, um, sound. Yeah, their lineup consists of three so-so keyboard players and a barely competent drummer. But even if they haven’t had enough lessons, they have all the right influences. Their icy vintage synth tones are borrowed from the likes of Kraftwerk, Devo and Suicide. Their yelpy vocals and primal beats are nicked from Siouxsie Sioux and The Slits. Their deadpan harmonies and neo-girl-group melodies come from Human League. And when they put them all together, they create a sound that can appeal to fans of all those groups — and create the missing link between Martha And The Muffins and Black Box Recorder.
