This came out in 2004 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):
If I recall correctly, back in 1987 — around the time of the first Dirty Dancing film — the Lambada was risque.
Nowadays, the average booty-bouncing hip-hop video makes that look about as sexy as square dancing. So perhaps no one should be surprised that the soundtrack to the Dirty Dancing sequel Havana Nights sounds less like the Buena Vista Social Club and more like a Cinco de Mayo party at P. Diddy’s Miami manse. Most of these dozen tracks from the likes of Wyclef Jean, Black Eyed Peas and Christina Aguilera are just typical hip-hop, pop, R&B and dance cuts with monotonous Latin grooves, melodies or instruments grafted on to them. There are a few brighter spots, like Aterciopelados’ smouldering El Estuche and the Julio Daivel Big Band’s Do You Only Wanna Dance, but overall, this Dirty Dancing is no great shakes.
