Classic Album Review: Skanic | Last Call

2Tone nostalgia meets Nirvana on the San Diego outfit's debut disc.

This came out in 1998 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

New dogs apparently can learn old tricks, judging by the debut disc from this nine-piece San Diego crew. This sucker is a dead ringer for a classic 2Tone CD by The Specials or Untouchables, from the peppy, propulsive rhythms and organ-heavy riffs to the surf-gangster guitar and chikka-chik vocalisms. But the smokin’ cover of Nirvana’s Breed reminds you Skanic are no mere nostalgia act. If this is last call, let’s have a double.
