This came out in 2005 — or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):
Some things are worth waiting for. New John Prine albums — especially ones as good as this — are at the top of that list.
Fair & Square, the personable folk icon’s first studio set of new material in a decade, finds the master in typically fine form. As usual, these understatedly beautiful tracks of easygoing folk and lightly rocking country are infused with Prine’s unique blend of wry wit (Crazy As A Loon), aw-shucks romanticism (The Moon is Down) and sharp political commentary (Some Humans Ain’t Human). And Prine makes it all seem as natural and effortless as daydreaming in a hammock on a summer day. Here’s hoping he doesn’t wait until 2105 to pen another — though I know it’ll be worth the wait anyway.
