Classic Album Review: Beck | Mutations

The ecelctic California singer-songwriter veers back toward indie-land.

This came out in 1998 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Don’t let the major label throw you — this is another of Beck‘s indie-centric outings, closer to 1995’s garage-folk outing One Foot In The Grave than his breakthrough offering Mellow Gold.

And like that CD, this disc has more than its share of acoustic, atmospheric guitar ballads and non-sequitur lyrics about robots and devils. But this also has one foot in the groove — be it twangy country, harpsichord waltzes or loungy bossa nova. If you’re looking for another Loser, wait for his next album. But for faithful fans, this is another winner.
