Classic Album Review: Katrina And The Waves | The Original Recordings 1983-1984

The British pop phenoms reissue their first two LPs in one handy package.

This came out in 2003 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

THE YEARS: Um, 1983 and ’84. Weren’t you listening?

THE STORY: Three words: Walking On Sunshine. If Katrina And The Waves had never written another song, that deft piece of perfect, pure pop — a sly revamp of You Can’t Hurry Love penned by former Soft Boys guitarist Kimberly Rew — would have been enough to assure them of immortality and keep their grandchildren in royalties. Luckily for them (and us), tunes like Do You Want Crying? and Going Down To Liverpool (most famously covered by The Bangles) helped them evade true one-hit-wonder status. This 20th-anniversary set contains their first two albums.

THE GOODIES: The three hits above, along with 17 other similarly sugar-coated studio tracks.

THE EXTRAS: Four live cuts and a DVD of a 1983 live show.
