Next Week in Music | Aug. 12-18 • 140 New (& Old) Releases Headed Your Way

Here's all the music you'll be adding to your playlist next week. And then some.

Some weeks it’s a famine. This week it’s a feast, with nearly 150 new albums, EPs and singles being released next week. Here are the ones I’m most looking forward to, presented in alphabetical order. Mark your calendars and pre-order your favourites — but don’t blame me if things change at the last minute:

THE SHORT LIST

Rodney Crowell
Texas

THE PRESS RELEASE: “Grammy winner Rodney Crowell explores his Lone Star roots with an eclectic cast of all-star friends on Texas, his adventurous new album of collaborations. Featuring Willie Nelson, Lyle Lovett, Ronnie Dunn, Billy F. Gibbons, Randy Rogers, Vince Gill, Lee Ann Womack, Steve Earle, Ringo Starr and more, the 11 tracks on Texas represent not just a fresh batch of weathered poetry from one of Americana’s finest craftsmen, but also an iconic singer-songwriter letting loose with his friends. “For the last few years, I’d been writing Texas-centric songs and revisiting some of my tunes from as far back as the mid-seventies,” Crowell explains. “Last year, I started referring to the collection of songs as the Texas album.”

The Hold Steady
Thrashing Thru the Passion

THE PRESS RELEASE: “Just after the new year, we headed up to Woodstock to The Isokon studio to record some new songs. We were joined by producer Josh Kaufman and engineer D. James Goodwin, who have helped us record everything we’ve done for the past few years. The songs sounded like a cool A side of an album. So, after Goodwin mixed the songs, we decided to put them together with some of our favorite songs we’d recorded in the past few years and make it an album. We pondered a track list for a bit, had our friend Dave Gardner master it, and here it is. We call it Thrashing Thru The Passion, which is taken from a line on You Did Good Kid.”

Killswitch Engage
Atonement

THE PRESS RELEASE:Atonement is the culmination of a trying and turbulent two-year period. KsE started kicking around ideas for the album as early as 2017. The band recorded the bulk of the material separately on both coasts. However, in the middle of the process, a polyp developed scar tissue in singer Jesse Leach’s throat, forcing him to undergo surgery. The intense three-month recovery ended with speech therapy, vocal therapy, and scream therapy. The band ultimately emerged with an album that is further evidence of their undeniable legacy as one of the most enduring metal bands of the last two decades and beyond.”

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard
Infest the Rats’ Nest

THE PRESS RELEASE: “The planet is in trouble. Dire trouble. But fear not: Melbourne seven-piece King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard return to save us all, this time armed only with blast beats, an arsenal of well-oiled guitars that are locked and loaded, and a desire to melt faces clean off. Their fifteenth studio album, Infest The Rats’ Nest is by far The Gizz’s hardest and heaviest album to date. How metal is it? Very Metal. Maybe even more.”

Ride
This is Not a Safe Place

THE PRESS RELEASE:This Is Not A Safe Place sees the rejuvenated Oxford four piece unite with revered DJ, producer, musical curator and remixer Erol Alkan, who was on production duties for 2017’s Weather Diaries. Rekindling that creative partnership has once again seen Ride push their sound forward, as hypnotic rhythms and washes of lush guitars come together with leftfield electronic influences. The combination creates a sound rich in their trademark shoegaze atmosphere, whilst simultaneously sounding fresh and creatively ambitious.”

Sleater-Kinney
The Center Won’t Hold

THE PRESS RELEASE:The Center Won’t Hold is the tenth studio album by Sleater-Kinney. It addresses transformation as it relates to the corrosion and decomposition of forms. Fractured and frayed by age or by loss, by internecine politics, by trauma or depression, these eleven songs ask what remains of a body, a human spirit, a relationship, a city, a country. The narrators herein sing from the brink of madness, corruption, loss, or grief. And though they speak to us from the narrow, near desperate strands to which they are consigned by others, or upon which they’ve self-exiled—feeling small, fearing obsolescence—they ask to be heard on the most sprawling of canvasses. By couching these personal stories in a sonic palette that unabashedly takes up space, what remains is a tale of survival: a treatise on female friendship, inner strength, resilience, and community.”

Frank Turner
No Man’s Land

THE PRESS RELEASE: “With Grammy-winning producer Catherine Marks (St. Vincent, Local Natives) at the helm and featuring a dynamic cast of all-female musicians, No Man’s Land is an album dedicated to telling the fascinating stories of women whose incredible lives have all too often been overlooked. “These stories should have been told already,” says Frank Turner of the album. “And I suspect if they were men they would be better known.”
