Penny Shades | Way Back: Exclusive Premiere

The honeymoon's over for the B.C. neo-soul quartet on their seductive new single.

Penny Shades search for the Way Back to love on their romantic new single and lyric video — premiering exclusively on Tinnitist.

A preview of the B.C. neo-soul quartet’s upcoming sophomore EP, the supple, smooth and smoky Way Back documents the dialogue between two people when the honeymoon phase in a relationship is over. Inspired by Anderson .Paak’s Make It Better, it’s a seductive ode to lovers working things out:

“Always the same back and forth and back with you
Line for line, know I’m trying too
A lovers’ quarrel
Can we make up and talk tomorrow?
Look what we started
Know we don’t have to finish right now let’s take a breather
And let the room calm down, come down baby don’t leave the room right now
Way back, can we take it way way back?
To that new sweet fresh kind of love.”

And Penny Shades definitely know how to take it way back: Hailing from Nelson, the vibrant alt-soul quartet are renowned for their original music fashioned from mesmerizing three-part harmonies, electrifying lead vocals and contemporary grooves infused with just a touch of psychedelic allure.

Penny Shades feature a dynamic mix of talents, boasting enchanting lead vocalist Sarah Orton, the skilled guitarist Jesse Lee, versatile keys/synth artist Jeremy Sauer and the rhythmic powerhouse drummer Ness Benamran. Their musical journey began during the pandemic, with the launch of their self-titled debut EP. In a short span, they’ve already graced major stages. Now they’re gearing up to unleash their eagerly anticipated second EP in 2024.
