Classic Album Review: Junior Senior | D-D-Don’t Don’t Stop the Beat

The odd-couple princes of dance-pop keep you coming back with their disco ditties.

This came out in 2003 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

One is young. The other is older. One is large. The other is small. One is straight. The other is gay. Together they are Danish duo Junior Senior, the latest clown princes of dance-pop.

“Do the kids dig what we do?” they ask on their booty-shaking debut disc D-D-Don’t Don’t Stop the Beat. The kids’ answer? “Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.” And no wonder: With their giddy enthusiasm, cotton-candy melodies and joyously juvenile lyrics (“Come on in, hang your coats / Eat our chips, we’ve got loads”), these guys and their droll disco ditties are instantly addictive. But it’s their inspired mix-and-match musicality — these cuts smoosh together classic disco, gritty funk, garage-rock, surf and psychedelia into one mind-blowing brew — that keeps you coming back for M-m-more.
