Classic Album Review: Jet | Dirty Sweet EP

The Australian retro-rockers' debut EP will tell you everything you need to know.

This came out in 2003 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

They are from Australia — Melbourne, if you want to get picky.

They share their name with a Paul McCartney song. They got signed in the wake of the feeding frenzy produced by The Vines’ success. They embrace the classic twin-guitar, bass-and-drums lineup. At least one of them owns a Gibson Flying V, a Marshall and an AC/DC T-shirt. The drummer sports a decent pair of mutton-chop sideburns. And, most importantly, they totally rock out like fellow ’70s acolytes The D4 and The Datsuns, cranking out choogling rawk anthems fashioned from nothing more complex than a few power chords, a couple of licks nicked from Angus Young, a fuzzbox, a hip-swivelling groove, a four-on-the floor drumbeat, a plonking cowbell and a few lines of doggerel about what a Cold Hard Bitch their girlfriend is. That’s all I know about Jet. Except that after hearing this four-track EP, I’ll be sure to pay attention to the followup album.
