Classic Album Review: Various Artists | A Bocephus Collection: Songs of Hank Williams Jr.

This tribute album has too many New Country lunkheads & too few rowdy friends.

This came out in 2003 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

“We are young country,” announce Blake Shelton, Trick Pony and Darryl Worley, kicking off — and simultaneously summing up — this tribute album to second-generation country royalty Hank Williams Jr.

A Bocephus Collection is — for want of a better word — saddled with interchangable New Country lunks like Montgomery Gentry, Trace Adkins, Tracy Lawrence and Alan Jackson, who grin and mug their way through redneck country-rock fare like Women I’ve Never Had, Outlaw Women and Family Tradition. Thankfully, Trick Pony are there to turn in a worthy version of All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight, while Georgia SatellitesDan Baird cranks out a bluesy Whiskey Bend And Hell Bound. Most listenable, though — and most fitting — are southern-rock takes on Born To Boogie by Lynyrd Skynyrd and If It Will It Will by .38 Special. Now those are the sort of rowdy friends you’d expent Bocephus to have over.
