Laying his demons bare, North pulls on characters like a series of strange coats. His first album Heaven Get Behind Me was written on a 100-year-old guitar, and recorded in a Soviet-era living room on a collection of vintage instruments, including a 1887 banjola. “I tracked down this odd instrument after hearing Dave Eugene Edwards playing one in 16 Horsepower,” North says. “It has such a haunting sound — that collision of blues and Americana and gospel — and it is the heart of this track.”
