Classic Album Review: Liars | Fins to Make us More Fish-Like

The indie rockers’ EP gives you a taste of their unique sonic and stylistic hybrid.

This came out in 2003 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Curious about the new wave of New York bands like Interpol, Radio 4 and Liars? Want to see what all the fuss is about without shelling out for a full album? Well, this new EP from Brooklyn’s Liars is as good a place to start as any.

In just three tunes and 11 minutes, Fins To Make Us More Fish-Like will politely yet firmly introduce you to their wonderfully unique sound, which integrates the wiry angularity of Gang Of Four, the sneering funk of John Lydon’s Public Image Ltd., the grit of ’80s No Wave and even some Jon Spencer Blues Explosion choogle. Plus, only one of the songs is from their album They Threw Us All In A Trench And Stuck a Monument On Top — which means you won’t feel too ripped off when you end up going back to the store the next day to buy it.
